Organized in 1867, Springfield Baptist Church is the oldest historically black Baptist Church in downtown Greenville, South Carolina. The first Church building was constructed in 1870. From 1867 until the building was readied in 1870, Springfield held its worship services in the white Greenville Baptist Church on West McBee Avenue. (This Church changed its name to First Baptist Church-Greenville in December 1890, and later on moved to its current location on Cleveland Street.)
The Springfield Baptist Church is a Christ-centered congregation moving forward to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We will give service to all people, leading them to a closer personal relationship with Christ.
In the 21st Century Springfield Baptist Church will provide leadership to advance the spiritual development of its members and lead unsaved/unchurched souls to Christ through outreach ministries.
